Article- Paul E. Smith on Bonsai Trays, Part 2

You notice, therefore that bonsai trays are a necessary addition when making a beautiful bonsai presentation, due to the following reasons:

1. A receptacle to hold the excess water that drains out of the bonsai pot is essential to prevent the soil from getting waterlogged. The bonsai trays keep the pots from getting saturated with water and also give it a neat appearance.

2. As the water in the tray begins to evaporate, due to the temperature in the room, the right amount of humidity is reached, for the plant to grow in a healthy environment.

3. You can water the plants wherever they are placed and do not have to carry each one to the sink to water them. You can water the plants, where they are positioned with a watering can, to dampen the soil. The excess water that drains out through the holes provided at the base of the pot is collected in the bonsai tray.

(continued from previous post)

You can buy Bonsai trays as single pieces or in packs of threes. It is possible to get them free from vendors when you buy bonsai pots. The ones that are sold in packs of three generally range anywhere between 3 to around 15 dollars depending on the size and shape of the tray. The best bonsai trays usually have little studs or legs to keep it off the ground, though some are sold, which are totally flat on the ground.

Article- Bonsai Trays by Paul E. Smith, Part 1

(Another) term for Bonsai Trays is "Humidity Trays." The function of these trays is to collect water that drains out of the bonsai pot. The other function of these bonsai trays is to provide humidity that helps the growth of the plant. These trays are used to provide a "finishing touch" that is elegant and appealing to the eye during presentation. It also prevents a messy look that is possible, if the pedestal, on which it is placed, becomes waterlogged. Therefore, the use of bonsai trays cannot be undermined, when cultivating bonsai plants.

Bonsai trays perform the important function of keeping the soil moist in the pot just after watering. It is possible that the roots of the plant do not get enough water, if it is watered from above. However, when the pot is placed in a humidity tray, which is filled with water, the soil remains moist at the bottom and the root tips are able to absorb water easily. If you spread gravel on the tray, before adding water, you ensure that the humidity level around the pot is maintained, for both the pot, as well as the soil.

You can get Bonsai trays in different sizes and shapes. One tray is normally enough for one plant. However, you can place many small bonsai pots on a large tray if you wish. This may be easier for you to shift around and water, especially, if you have to move them indoors and outdoors. It is (sometimes) possible to get a tray at no cost from a vendor for each bonsai pot that you purchase.
